Burgers, Baps, Bowls and…cue Spinnaker!
Well, more barbecue in fact, as having downed their ‘woods’ we performed to the members of Purbrook Heath Bowls Club at their annual summer event.
The grass may not always be greener but in this case it certainly was, with the bowling lawn looking refreshingly verdant compared to the hay-like lawns most of us have experienced of late on the home front!
Having sung our first set we were treated to lunch at which time we also had time to inspect the raffle prizes and mingle with guests. A select few Spinnakerettes admirably displayed some knowledge of bowling and there was an exchange of bowling glossary terms in some corners - hopefully not getting on anyone’s ‘wick’ in the process – and all the while the late summer sun became steadily hotter.
We were duly instructed to ‘be up’ again and with ‘drive’ we started our second set - also managing to satisfy a few song requests along the way. By the ‘end’ of our second set - and without ‘bias’ - our lovely audience had got the ‘measure’ of us and we in turn hoped that we had managed to get them on a ‘hook’. Since there was mention of a return visit around Christmas time, perhaps it would be fair to say that we did indeed manage to bowl them over! (am I hearing groans?) and prizes to anyone who spotted all the bowling references in inverted commas!
